A person-centred perspective

Integrated thinking.
Clearer understanding.

Neuropsychiatry brings different parts of a person’s story together, without reducing them to a scan, a diagnosis or a list of symptoms.

What is neuropsychiatry?

Where clinical disciplines meet

Neuropsychiatry is concerned with the relationship between brain function, mental health, cognition and behaviour.

It is particularly valuable when a presentation cannot be understood through a single lens. The aim is to make sense of the whole clinical picture, including the person’s history, symptoms, relationships, daily function and wider circumstances.

Assessment may draw on medical records, collateral information, neurological findings, neuropsychological testing and the psychiatric interview. Each source matters, but none should be considered in isolation.

When it may help

Complex does not have to mean unclear.

A neuropsychiatric perspective may be useful in a range of clinical situations.

01

Changes in memory, thinking or behaviour

02

Neurological illness with emotional or psychiatric symptoms

03

Acquired brain injury and its wider effects

04

Complex presentations that cross traditional specialty boundaries

05

Questions about diagnosis, treatment or functional impact

06

Support for families navigating unfamiliar change

A careful clinical process

The approach

Good assessment is rigorous, but it should also feel humane. The process rests on three simple principles.

01

Listen

Begin with the person’s own account, the family’s observations and the clinical history in its proper context.

02

Integrate

Bring psychiatric, neurological, cognitive, medical and psychosocial information into one coherent formulation.

03

Explain

Translate complexity into an understandable opinion that can guide care, communication and next steps.

Clinical perspective

“The work is not only to identify symptoms. It is to understand why they have emerged, what sustains them and what they mean in the life of this particular person.”
